9 Amazing Makeup Routine Tips for Nurses
1) Start By Washing Your Face
This is the first step in any nurse makeup routine, and it's especially important when you're not just getting ready for a night out; you're getting ready to work. You need to make sure your face is clean and makeup-free so that you don't end up with smudges on your eyelids or lipstick on your cheeks.
I use CETAPHIL Hydrating Cleanser because it has no fragrance or color. It also rinses off entirely so I can get right into the next step: moisturizing!

2) Use a Good Moisturizer
Nurses and doctors need to put on a brave face every day. They don't have the luxury of sleeping in their makeup because they're often called upon at any time of the day or night. That's why it pays to invest in a moisturizer that will keep your skin looking fresh and bright even after long shifts.
Nurse Jamie Clear 2 and Curél Daily Healing Dry Skin Lotion are the two best moisturizers for nurses that will help keep your skin hydrated.
3) Opt For Oil-Free Primer
This is my favorite tip to share with other nurses who wear makeup. I have oily skin, so I need to use a non-oil-based primer that won't clog my pores. My favorite primers are Phoera All Matte Pore Primer and Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, which both keep my face matte all day long without making me break out.
4) Apply Concealer
There's nothing worse than a dark circle under your eye when you're working long shifts and taking care of patients—it's just not professional! So make sure you have a good concealer on hand so that if you need it, it's there for you.
My favorite is Neutrogena Concealer in light medium. It goes on smoothly, covers well, and stays put through all kinds of crazy adventures in the hospital!
5) Don't Use Foundation!
It's not a good look for you. The makeup is too heavy and can clog your pores. Instead, use CC cream to elevate your skin tone and give it a nice glow.
The best brand for this is IT Cosmetics CC Cream, which comes in seven different shades, so there's one for everyone. It also has SPF 50, which is excellent for protecting your skin from the sun.
6) Use A Bit Of Mascara
I know what you're thinking: mascara and nursing don't mix. But hear me out! The trick is to use just a little bit—just enough to define your lashes and add a bit of volume. That way, it won't get into your eyes or smear all over your face by the end of the day.
L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Makeup Mascara is my favorite because it really does give me that "natural" look that I want without being too dramatic.
7) Use Lip Balm Before You Apply Lipstick
You can't go wrong with a good lip balm, especially when you're about to apply lipstick. The balm will help prevent your lips from drying out when you wear lipstick, giving you a smooth application every time.
I use Chapstick Party Favor Lip Balm for my lips; it helps to eradicate dryness and keeps my lips moist.
8) Use A Very Light Tone Of Lipstick
The last thing you want to do is look like you're wearing too much makeup when you're in your scrubs. A soft pink tone can be a great way to add color to your lips while still looking natural and professional.
9) Set Your Makeup
You're going to have a long day at work, so you'll want your makeup to last as long as possible. I learned this trick from a friend who is also a nurse: set your makeup with loose powder after applying it so that it stays in place throughout the day.
This can help keep the foundation from melting off your face in the heat and humidity of the hospital and will prevent those little freckles on your nose from disappearing before lunchtime!
